Holiday shipping deadlines 2026: how to set a store cutoff your customers can trust

Key takeaways

  • USPS recommends shipping Ground Advantage by Thursday, December 17, and FedEx Ground Economy's last day to ship is Tuesday, December 15. UPS hasn't published its 2026 dates yet.
  • The carrier deadline isn't your deadline. Your store cutoff is the carrier's last-ship date minus your handling time and a buffer for peak volume.
  • Christmas falls on a Friday this year and Hanukkah starts December 4, so last year's dates won't carry over.
  • Handling time is the one part of the equation you control, and it's where most late holiday orders actually go wrong.

Every December, I watch the same thing happen. A seller copies the carrier's holiday shipping deadlines straight onto their site, a wave of orders lands the night before, and by December 23 the inbox is full of "where's my order?" emails. The carrier didn't miss its deadline. The seller did, because the box wasn't packed until two days after the order came in.

The 2026 holiday shipping deadlines are out for USPS and FedEx, and I've pulled them all into one place below. But the more useful number is the one only you can calculate: your store cutoff. That's the last day a customer can order from you and still get their package on time. It's always earlier than the carrier deadline, and this guide shows you exactly how much earlier.

When are the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?

For delivery before December 25, USPS recommends shipping Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail by Thursday, December 17, Priority Mail by Friday, December 18, and Priority Mail Express by Saturday, December 19. FedEx's last day to ship ranges from Tuesday, December 15 for Ground Economy to Thursday, December 24 for SameDay. UPS hasn't released its 2026 last-ship dates as of October 5, 2026.

USPS holiday shipping deadlines 2026

A USPS delivery truck parked outside the post office, preparing for the busy holiday season. This scene highlights the importance of shipping deadlines, as customers aim to send holiday gifts on time using services like priority mail and USPS ground advantage.

USPS dates are for expected delivery before December 25. Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory moves Ground Advantage up a day, to Wednesday, December 16. All other offshore dates match the Lower 48.

  • International: Wednesday, December 9 for First-Class Package International Service and Priority Mail International, and Wednesday, December 16 for Priority Mail Express International. These dates are the same for every region, including Canada and Mexico.
  • Military (APO/FPO/DPO): Wednesday, November 4 for Ground Advantage, and Wednesday, December 9 for First-Class Mail and Priority Mail.

FedEx dates are for arrival by December 24. Ground and Home Delivery deadlines depend on how many transit days your package needs, which depends on the origin and destination ZIP codes. Check your actual transit time on FedEx's ground map before you set a cutoff. The dates also assume a regularly scheduled pickup or a drop-off at a staffed FedEx location.

UPS holiday shipping deadlines 2026

A UPS delivery truck is parked on a quiet residential street, surrounded by homes adorned with festive decorations for the holiday season. The scene captures the spirit of holiday shipping as packages are prepared for delivery, reminding customers to ship their holiday gifts early to meet shipping deadlines.

UPS hasn't published its 2026 last days to ship by service yet. Here's what its 2026 holiday schedule already confirms. On Christmas Eve, UPS delivers for all services, but pickup is limited to Air and international Air shipments that were prearranged by Friday, December 18. There's no UPS Ground pickup on December 24, and UPS is closed on Christmas Day. We'll update this post when UPS releases its dates.

Why isn't the carrier deadline your deadline?

Because the carrier's clock starts when the package is in its hands, not when your customer clicks "buy." Three things sit between those two moments.

  • Your handling time. Picking, packing, labeling, and getting the box onto a truck. In November and December, this is the step that stretches.
  • Carrier pickup timing. A box packed at 6 PM after your daily pickup has left doesn't ship until tomorrow.
  • "Recommended" means recommended. Carrier holiday dates are estimates, not promises. USPS stopped processing refund requests for guaranteed service on Priority Mail Express as of August 1, 2023, so even the fastest option isn't backed by a refund if it's late.

Copy the carrier date onto your site and you've promised your customers something the carrier never promised you.

How do you set your own holiday shipping cutoff?

Work backward from the carrier date. The formula is simple:

Carrier last-ship date − your handling time − a peak buffer = your store cutoff

Here's how it plays out for a seller shipping USPS Ground Advantage with a two-business-day handling time:

  1. Carrier last-ship date: Thursday, December 17
  2. Subtract two business days of handling: Tuesday, December 15
  3. Subtract one business day of buffer: Monday, December 14

That seller's holiday cutoff is Monday, December 14, three days before the date every other site is quoting. Run the same math on FedEx Ground with three-day transit (last day to ship Monday, December 21) and you land on Wednesday, December 16.

How do you measure your real handling time?

Use last November and December, not your summer average. Pull your order timestamps and ship timestamps from those weeks and find the gap at the slow end, not the average. If 90% of your orders shipped within two business days at peak, plan around two days, not the one day you hit in July.

How much buffer should you add?

My default is one business day. Go to two if you're packing orders yourself, if you sell kits or bundles that take longer to assemble, or if a single sick day would put you behind. The buffer is what absorbs a missed pickup, a label printer jam, or a surge after a flash sale.

Should you set a different cutoff for each shipping option?

Yes. If you offer standard and expedited shipping at checkout, give each one its own cutoff. A Priority Mail Express option (last ship date Saturday, December 19) gives procrastinators a later, paid path. That keeps sales coming in after your standard cutoff instead of shutting them off.

What's different about the 2026 holiday shipping calendar?

A few things make this year's dates harder to eyeball than usual.

  • Christmas falls on a Friday. Every weekday deadline shifts compared with 2025. Saturday, December 19 and Sunday, December 20 fall right in the final stretch, so check whether your carrier picks up from you on weekends before counting those days.
  • Hanukkah starts early. Hanukkah runs December 4 through 12, and USPS is specifically reminding shippers to plan for it. My recommendation (not a carrier date): ship Hanukkah orders by Wednesday, November 25 for Ground Advantage, or by Monday, November 30 for Priority Mail.
  • Thanksgiving closes the carriers. UPS is closed on Thursday, November 26, so build that day out of any Black Friday or Cyber Monday handling estimates.
  • Peak surcharges are already running. Carrier surcharges started in late September and the per-package demand fees start October 25 and 26. We broke down every fee in our guide to 2026 peak season shipping surcharges.

Where should your store cutoff appear?

Everywhere a customer makes a timing decision. At a minimum:

  • A sitewide announcement bar starting in early December
  • Product pages, near the add-to-cart button
  • Checkout, next to each shipping option
  • Order confirmation emails
  • Your shipping FAQ

Then time your email and SMS sends so customers hear about the cutoff a few days before it passes, not the day after. A "last day for holiday delivery" email is one of the most dependable sends of the season.

After the cutoff, don't just shut the door. Promote gift cards, digital gift notes that pair with a later ship date, or local pickup if you offer it.

How do you shorten handling time during peak?

Since handling time is the part of the formula you control, cutting it is the most direct way to push your cutoff later and keep selling longer.

  • Batch and prep. Build pick lists by SKU, pre-assemble packaging for your best sellers, and pre-kit bundles before the rush.
  • Add people before you need them. The time to line up extra hands is November, not December 15.
  • Lock in your pickup schedule. Confirm daily pickup times with each carrier so packed boxes don't sit overnight.

This is where I see Saltbox members get the biggest edge. With Saltbox Fulfillment, an on-site operations team handles pick and pack, so handling time holds steady even when order volume doesn't. When a promo or a viral post spikes orders, S.O.S. (Saltbox Operations Support) adds labor on demand, so you don't have to move your cutoff up to cope.

For members shipping from more than one Saltbox location, inventory sitting closer to customers means fewer transit days, which is a later cutoff by another route. The Saltbox Holiday Hub has the checklists and playbooks to plan the rest of your season.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?

It depends on the carrier and service. USPS recommends Thursday, December 17 for Ground Advantage and Saturday, December 19 for Priority Mail Express. FedEx's last day ranges from Tuesday, December 15 (Ground Economy) to Thursday, December 24 (SameDay). Your store's last day should be earlier, after you subtract your handling time.

Does USPS deliver on Christmas Eve 2026?

USPS's holiday dates are for expected delivery before December 25 and don't name a Christmas Eve cutoff. UPS has confirmed delivery for all services on December 24, and FedEx's dates are for arrival by December 24.

Has UPS released its 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?

Not as of October 5, 2026. UPS has confirmed that it delivers for all services on Christmas Eve, limits Christmas Eve pickup to prearranged Air shipments, and is closed on Christmas Day.

What's the difference between a carrier deadline and a store cutoff?

A carrier deadline is the last day to hand a package to the carrier. A store cutoff is the last day a customer can order from you and still get the package on time. The store cutoff is earlier by your handling time plus a buffer.

What should I do if a holiday order misses the cutoff?

Tell the customer right away and offer a choice: upgrade to an expedited service, ship as-is with a gift note explaining the timing, or switch to a gift card. Clear communication beats a surprise late delivery every time.
